Zephyr’s Open Internal Ranking Q1 2025/2026

Zephyr’s yearly internal ranking has finally kicked off with the open internal ranking of Q1 having been the first shot at getting some points. It was a very interesting yet hectic tournament to kick off the year with newcomers and old faces both joining the tournament, leading to a total of 12 participants. This included 2 newcomers, both coming from the introweek and open trainings, those being MrWheat and Weirdperson. As for how they fared during the tournament.. you’ll have to read on!

Before the tournament even started, Weirdperson was proving to be a very skillfull player. Despite coming from Cyprus and barely being able to train against good players, he mastered Little Mac and took multiple matches off of established players. Mattie however was also not out of the question to take the win, with very high level Rosalina and Zelda gameplay leaving others stumped. And of course, the wildcard of ex-Zephyr members playing along meant that anything could happen. Despite all that, most people were expecting Weirdperson to win. During the tourney itself, it turned out that not everyone was taking things as seriously. Unique, who tends to play Falco and similar characters only played Ridley, and Tanglad too didn’t seem quite as invested. This all came to ahead when the aforementioned 2 players had to face off, which ended up being in a different game alltogether! The most hype moment which will certainly end up in the montage was a 0-130% into kill combo from Muurverf’s Inkling against VincentG’s Byleth. Finally, for the results. In the end, Weirdperson’s Little Mac proved to victorious, allthough Mattie was not willing to end the grand finals without a fight, with it ending in 3-2.

The points gained during this first tournament are as followed:

3. Voerzitter (Bowser, King K. Rool) – 9 points 

4. Tanglad (Donkey Kong) – 6 points

9. DVoid (King Dedede) – 1 point

Thus, the top 3 consists of newcomer Weirdperson coming in first place with what some may consider the game’s worst character, 2nd going to Mattie who has been knocked down from getting 1st last year and Zephyr boomer Voerzitter snatching 3rd place.

This tournament also offically starts off the rankings for this year, which means all the members of the Zephyr Smash scene this year can now start challenging one another. As for the tournament itself, the VOD unfortunately got corrupted :(. We will make sure the next VOD will not suffer the same fate though! . We wish all players the best of luck with the rankings for 2025/2026!

Zephyr’s Internal Ranking Q4 & Final Ranking 2024-2025

Zephyr’s yearly internal ranking has finally concluded with the internal ranking Q4 having been the last opportunity to alter the rankings. But before we go to the rankings, we also have to cover the tournament itself. So let’s start with that. The tournament this time had 11 competitors, with two new competitors entering the fray. You might be wondering who could be joining this late in the year, but actually they are somewhat familiar faces to Zephyr’s smash community because they also joined the casual smash 2v2 tournament and helped during Dynamash we had earlier this year. Indeed, they were Robin (Berd) & Oscar (memvis) who have officially entered the Zephyr smash ranking and even though were not the favorites to win, had fun. 

The favorite to win this tournament, however, was a more difficult question than it would seem. Since the return of Mattie, a deadlock had been created among the top smash players at Zephyr where Mattie would usually beat Tino, Tino would usually beat Tanglad and Tanglad would usually beat Mattie. Combined with the fact that for them the tournament was extra intense because the top 3 spots were highly contested this year according to the points. The difference in points between rank 2 Tino and rank 1 Tanglad was only two points before the tournament and similarly for third place between rank 3 Unique and rank 4 Mattie differing only 1 point. Unique had to outplace Mattie in order to secure his third place spot, however unfortunately lost to Tino and Vincentg. Eventually, with only the aforementioned top 3 players left, Tanglad had to face off against Tino whom the winner of would have to fight Mattie in grand finals. Tino eventually took the win over Tanglad and Mattie won the tournament beating Tino.

The points gained during this final tournament are as followed:

2. Tino (Cloud, Mr. Game and Watch, Luigi) – 10 points

3. Tanglad (Cloud, Captain Falcon) – 7 points

Thus, the top 3 consists of Tino in first place getting his revenge from just missing top 3 last year. Tanglad at second place barely losing to Tino for first place by just one point and Mattie at third place who despite a huge disadvantage by having missed the first two tournaments, fought his way back to the top.

Zephyr’s Dynamash 4.0

On the 22nd of March, Zephyr held its annual Dynamash smash ultimate tournament for the fourth year in a row in collaboration with the Dynamo esports center. Various smashers, including some tournament regulars and both current and old zephyr members, attended this classic singles, double-elimination tournament to battle it out for a couple of pretty nice trophies and prize money. 

The day started off at 10:00 where members of Zephyr and Dynamo were up early to prepare the venue for the tournament. This included setting up the switches, preparing the stream and setting up the payment and bracket management booth. Afterward, the first attendees began entering the venue around 11:00 and the start of the tournament would be kicked off by an opening speech at 12:00. 

The first phase of the tournament had the 23 participants play until the best 8 players were left. The matches in the first phase had a lot of character variety, with almost no participants playing the same character as any of their other competitors. This makes each match unique because you will see a different character face another different character each time and makes watching each match very exciting and fresh. Some personal highlights for me who was commentating and thus only watched stream matches, were Voerzitter vs. Tino, two of the strongest Zephyr (ex-)members Zephyr has known and Eneomas vs. Potatoes, as Eneomas was in the top 3 of last year’s Dynamash and thus here to defend his title from losers side.

Onto the next phase of the tournament, top 8.

The top 8 was almost entirely streamed, starting from the top 6 players, and so I could happily watch them all. I’m glad we did because these matches I would not have wanted to miss for the world. From dutchmvp26 flying all over the stage with his insane movement tech to an insane clutch by YUFFIE! against sansvolk (my favorite moment of the tournament which made me lose my voice the next day), every match showed the time, effort and love these people have put into this game.

The grand finale was an exciting match between xDTL who played Terry and Momo! who played Banjo-Kazooie. At this point the question was who would win. Would it be xDTL who had won all his matches and who was the one who put Momo! into losers, or would it be Momo! who would then become the successor of VeCystim who won last years Dynamash with Banjo-Kazooie. After a hard-fought set, xDTL beat Momo! with a clean 3-0 and was thus crowned the champion of Dynamash 2025 with Momo! taking second and sansvolk taking third. After the set, the closing ceremony started where the trophies were handed out to the winners (sansvolk had to leave early so xDTL pulled up a very charming picture of him on his phone lol) and ending Dynamash 2025.

Zephyr’s Internal Ranking Tournament 2024-2025 Q3

“Alaaf” to all the readers. Currently, the Dutch celebration Carnaval is taking place in Eindhoven, but do you know what else is also taking place in Eindhoven? That’s right, the third Zephyr Internal ranking tournament! Well, to be exact, it has already happened as of the writing of this blog post. The tournament was on Wednesday the 27th of February and of course we will give you a rundown of the tournament. 

The tournament this time had a total of 8 competitors, the same amount as last time. However, surprisingly enough, the 8 competitors were not the exact same people as the last IR. Essentially, we traded three players. Unfortunately, competitors Martino (Tino) and Florian (Irregular) could not join the tournament this time and Jeffrey (Future2025) who was an exchange student, has now left Zephyr since his exchange is over (O7 you will be missed). Instead, we had one newly joined Zephyr member and competitor Lean (“I have a snail btw”), one returning competitor Akam (AkBob) who missed the previous tournament and Matthias (Mattie) who is both a returning competitor and technically a newly joined Zephyr member. Mattie is known and feared by his competitors as the best defensive player in Zephyr and took second place in the global IR of last year. This year, he had been MIA as a Zephyr member for the first half because he also was on exchange but has returned for the second half and surely will fire up the competition.  

Furthermore, the tournament itself this time was AGAIN a little different from previous iterations. The whole tournament was all best of 5 sets EXCEPT the first round which was best of 3. Even though, we had the same amount of players as last time, this decision was made as there was a concern for going over time. This concern was mainly due to a shift in the meta of the Zephyr Smash community. This change is the closing of the gap in skill levels between players and can be explained by, among others, usage of coaching from the esports committee and returning players whose play style counter other dominant players. As players get closer in skill level, games and sets will overall take longer. This is an exciting development, as matches between equally skilled players are always the most fun to watch and feel even better to win.

Lastly, we got Tanglad taking back his crown as winner of the IR Q3 tournament, with Mattie getting an amazing second place despite having had a half year hiatus from competitive smash. Their grand finals set was a treat to watch with clip worthy moments that will definitely be put in the clip compilation, so stay tuned for that.

Lustrum LAN & casual tournament

This time we have a 2 for 1 special blog post. We will be covering two separate events that happened closely after each other. These events are the Lustrum LAN smash tournament and the casual 2v2 custom balance tournament.  

Lustrum LAN smash tournament:

The Lustrum LAN was a LAN held at the student sport’s center in Eindhoven and organized by ESEV Zephyr in collaboration with other Dutch esports associations such as DSEA Ignite, TSEA Link and Dorans. During the LAN a lot of competitions with prizes were held varying from beer pong to pub quizes to of course video games. Among the video game competitions, Smash bros. Ultimate could obviously not be missed, and thus our smash player who were attending the LAN (Mattie, DVoid, Tino, AkBob, Vincentg and “I have a snail btw”) entered this tournament. It was an 11-player double-elimination tournament on the 21st of February 2025 with players from a wide variety of places, as the LAN was open to all associations and friends. The odds for a Zephyr win, were very highly likely due to the amount of players, but this would also mean that a team kill would happen quite quickly. In fact, the first team kill took AkBob because he had to face Mattie directly into Tino who both are ranked higher in the current Zephyr internal ranking than AkBob. 

Furthermore, almost all other Zephyr members would eventually sink into loser sides where more team kills occurred. For instance, “I have a snail btw” was eliminated by DVoid and Tino was eliminated by Vincentg. Afterward, both DVoid and Vincentg would be eliminated by theflashylucario, the cloud player and LizardWizard222, the ness player at 5th and 3rd respectively. Nevertheless, one player stayed in winners the whole time and went on to win the entire tournament without losing any set. This person was Mattie taking the win for Zephyr in the end. Both Mattie and Vincentg received prizes as they both were top 3 with 3rd place receiving a medal and Nintendo t-shirt, and 1st receiving the same plus a brand-new copy of Mario & Luigi Brothership. All in all, the tournament was fun, competitive, the prizes were nice (Thank you LAN committee and Nintendo for sponsoring!) and overall ran smoothly despite some hiccups with wireless controllers acting up. 

10/10 would go again next year.

Casual 2v2 custom balance tournament

The smash committee organized a casual smash event with a twist on the 25th of February 2025. This event was the first iteration of the Casual 2v2 custom balance tournament. In this event, Zephyr members would compete in teams of two against other teams and “balance” characters by nerfing or buffing the entire roster. At the start, each team would buff and nerf three characters, taking turns between all teams until all characters had been balanced. Reasons for balancing ranged from, nerfing another team’s main, buffing their own main or just funny reasons such as nerfing all child characters. 

Afterward, the teams would be put in a double-elimination bracket playing 2v2 with the balanced roster, items and randomly selected stages for the rest of the tournament. We had four teams: AnnaAva12 & Mattie, Memvis & DVoid, Berd & Muurverf and Tanglad/Unique/Vincentg (sub out per game). All teams, had different strategies some strategically picked their characters, such as team Memvis & DVoid with their insanely buffed King Dedede and Incineroar. These characters, are normally already very strong but with the buffs, shields were being broken incredibly fast which then would almost always lead into a kill if your teammate could not help you. Other teams would just play characters that were not entirely nerfed into the ground and somewhat easy to pilot, and others just played characters because they like them despite their balancing, such as Rose with Kirby and Berd with Luigi. The sets were chaotic and different for new and experienced players alike, where any team had a good chance of winning. This can be proven as the team consisting of only experienced members did not win the tournament. No no, the winners of the tournament were team Memvis & DVoid who were rewarded with bags of candy. The tournament was luckily well received, and hopefully we will be able to do one again someday.

Special tournament highlight play-by-play: (Bossch Battle: Smash Bros Ultimate)

Here we have a special blog post for you folks that highlights a very exciting, recently finished tournament. The first team players of Zephyr Smash (Tanglad, Tino, Unique and Vincentg) pulled up to a fun tournament in the city that all non-native Dutch speakers dread to pronounce: ‘s Hertogenbosch, or Den Bosch for short. This tournament was called Bossch Battle: Smash Bros Ultimate and was a 32-player bracket held in skatepark World Skate Center organized by Denboschesports. This tournament was a 2-day tournament where top-8 qualifiers was played on the 18th of January and the top 8 players would return to battle it out on the 8th of February to decide the ultimate winner. 

Top 8 qualifiers:

The top 8 qualifiers format was round-robin of four pools with 8-players each. Each player had to fight all the other 7 players and the top 4 players would advance out of their pool to the next stage of the qualifiers. In this round robin phase, our players Unique and Vincentg unluckily were placed in the same pool. This would effectively decrease the chances of all our players making it out of the round-robin phase. On the other hand lady luck did smile upon Tanglad and Tino as they were placed in separate pools so they did not have to “team kill”…. well, this is not entirely true. As you, the attentive reader, might have already noticed from the pictures, there were also some very familiar players in the tournament. Indeed, the ex-Zephyr smash legends, BrockBeBrocking and Voerzitter were also attending this tournament! It was an epic clash of the strongest Zephyr smash utlimate players in history vs the strongest Zephyr smash ultimate players of today where Voerzitter was placed in Tanglad’s pool and BrockBeBrocking was placed in Tino’s pool. 

After the round-robin phase, we lost Vincentg and Voerzitter ending as sixth and fifth respectively in their pools and the rest advancing to top 16 double elimination. Here, Tanglad was immediately met with his old arch rival and fellow Kazuya main BrockBeBrocking. BrockBeBrocking beat Tanglad and send him to losers to fight Unique. Tanglad won this battle and his consecutive matches to qualify for top 8. On the other side of bracket, Tino had to face BrockBeBrocking for their qualifying match after they both lost in winners. Tino won against BrockBeBrocking and punched his ticket to top 8 as well. 

Top 8:

Now, with both Tanglad and Tino as the only (ex-)Zephyr members remaining in the top 8 they had to lock-in even more to obtain the win. This was especially true as their opponents were seeded higher than them. Tino played first against his opponent, and although he put up a good effort, he had to eventually bow down in defeat at 7th. Tanglad had to face an opponent who he had faced and lost to before, Kayleigh, the runner-up of Dynamash 2024. It was an uphill battle but Tanglad clutched it out and made an upset beating the Yoshi main. Next, Tanglad now faced a character he was also all too familiar with, the king of the jungle himself Donkey Kong donned in the same white fur Tanglad prefers himself. These matches were intense and the DK main even started trying to style on Tanglad, feeling confident after winning the first two games. Tanglad however, did not approve of this and destroyed him the next game under 2 minutes, which can be seen below. Tanglad unfortunately did lose afterward finishing 5th, but he at least showed his opponent that you cannot disrespect him and when asked what that insane game was, he will just say “yeah, that was just a Kazuya game”

Charity stream

From the 21st of December 12:00 until the 22nd of December 00:00 as part of the streaming week, the Board of E.S.E.V Zephyr hosted a charity stream for the charity Kus van Kiki.

They streamed non-stop live from a single house, playing a variety of games, from thrilling solo challenges to hilarious team games, and even cooking streams! Next to these fun games, the board set up donation goals when certain milestones were hit. Because of the overwhelming support from everyone on the stream we saw our chairman Oscar do the cinnamon challenge, and paint his hair Zephyr red. We also saw our treasurer Tom wax one of his legs, and our commisioner of internal affairs shave his head completely bald. Lastly, you will also see the entire board with painted fingernails for the next 3 months. 

Together, we raised more than €2500 for charity. Which everyone was extremely pleased with. The charity was co-founded by Steven’s aunt and uncle after his cousin was diagnosed with terminal cancer. We are honored to have been able to support their mission and contribute to the meaningful work they do.

Zephyr’s Internal Ranking Tournament 2024-2025 Q2

As the end of 2024 is almost upon us, it also means that it is again high time for an internal ranking! The second internal ranking tournament was held on Wednesday the 4th of December and was a closed tournament for Zephyr members only. 

Since this is the first closed tournament, the amount of participants was smaller compared to the last tournament, which was open to everybody. Nevertheless, this did not take away from the competitiveness of the tournament, and we even got to welcome one new player who joined the tournament, Jeffrey (Future2025). He joined the Zephyr smash community after the last internal ranking tournament and has now officially entered the Zephyr smash ranking. 

Furthermore, the tournament itself this time was a little different from previous iterations. The whole tournament was all best of 5 sets. Normally this would not be possible because this would take too much time, and we play best of 3 sets until losers semi-finals. However, due to only having 8 competitors (everybody made top 8 !!!), it was possible this time. This was a nice change of pace as in best of 5 sets there is more time to improvise, adapt and overcome your opponent, and of course everybody gets to play more Super Smash Bros., which always is a win. 

Lastly, we got Irregular and Future2025 making their debut in commentating for smash and Tino making his debut as an internal ranking tournament champion. He dethroned Tanglad, who was the runner-up and also the previous tournament winner, in an intense grand final set, which you can watch on the ESEV Zephyr YouTube channel.

Zephyr’s Internal Ranking Tournament 2024-2025 Q1

Zephyr’s yearly internal ranking has finally started with the first internal ranking tournament. As usual, the tournament was held on the last day of the open trainings, so even non-zephyr members could join this internal ranking tournament. This makes the first tournament always extra exciting because you never know what new faces will show up and if any hidden bosses might be among them. 

We welcomed two new players who joined the tournament, Diego (Dego) & Florian (irregular). They have now joined Zephyr as new members and officially have entered the Zephyr smash rankings. 

Furthermore, two alumni zephyr members Ernst (BrockBeBrocking) & Daan (Voerzitter) joined for their very last internal ranking tournament as both have graduated and will not be members of Zephyr anymore starting this year. As known powerhouses of the Zephyr smash ranking, they did their reputation proud one last time with Voerzitter placing third and BrockBeBrocking placing second. These placings were well deserved, especially for BrockBeBrocking because he unwillingly had to play on an empty stomach. This was because Ernst was victim to what we have dubbed the “KFC incident”. 

The KFC incident is the unfortunate events that happened to Ernst trying to get KFC for dinner right before and during the tournament. Ernst planned to have KFC for dinner right before the start of the tournament at 18:30, so he ordered at around 18:00. Unfortunately, the food didn’t arrive due to some error on the side of the KFC. After receiving this news, Ernst tried to order again at around 19:00, at which point the tournament had already started. As Ernst was playing in the tournament and getting hungrier, he again received news that his order didn’t arrive. The reason this time was because the delivery driver fell with his food on his way to Fenix. Now, basically starving, Ernst ordered his food for a third time, and finally received his food successfully around 21:00. In the end, he had been waiting more than 3 hours for his food and needless to say, we can assume this was a very memorable last tournament for Ernst. 

Lastly, we bid Ernst & Daan a heartfelt goodbye and wish them the best of luck in whatever the future may hold next for them, both in- and outside of smash.

2024-2025 teams

Meet our new teams for this year

The Rocket League Committee is happy to announce our Rocket League teams for the upcoming year. We decided to make three bigger teams for competitions to come, and one casual team to enjoy some time playing the game together.

Zephyr Fenrir continues as our first team with an updated roster, competing on the highest standard in this year’s tournaments.

Zephyr Ryu follows up as the team ranked second, also consistently participating in high level tournaments.

Zephyr Anubis and Zephyr Fishron will be more casual-oriented teams, occasionally taking part in events.
